To Do you work with any students who doubt their abilities? We all do! September 15th is International Dot Day – a global celebration of creativity, courage, and collaboration – and we celebrate it with the author of the powerful book The Dot. This tale of a little girl who doubts her ability to create art is a very effective entry into experimentation with belief and boundaries.

Peter H. Reynolds reads his classic book, The Dot, and meets the founder of International Dot Day, Terry Shay. The program also interacts with the students of North Tama Community School in Iowa, and asks Terry Shay and Peter H. Reynolds about their lives, creativity, and The Dot.

One way to apply students’ excitement about The Dot is to let them loose to experiment, as Vashti did with the dot. Simply have them make a mark and sign it! Consider adapting the strategy Visual Walkabout video (Canadian Version) / Visual Walkabout (PDF) to create a student gallery of artwork. Hang the art and have students walk around the classroom gallery, leaving comments and questions on sticky notes next to each piece. Or, since some say creativity can benefit from structure, you might help your students harness their creativity by trying a shape poem with the strategy Make It Concrete video (Canadian Version) / Make It Concrete (PDF), from our Spotlight on Strategies series. Have students write about the dot, dots, or other marks! However you choose to celebrate, be sure to post pictures of your students’ creations on social media using #CelebrateWithDE!
